Students from a wide range of backgrounds undertake this course, and every student, both male and female has a carefully tailored programme to suit their career aspirations and interests.
The course is designed for students considering careers working within the health and social care sector, and students interested in working with children and young people.
Those considering working within either the health and social care sector, or with children and young people, will need to be able to demonstrate they have a wide range of skills in a range of settings. This programme offers a range of work based learning opportunities and has strong links with community project work, local employers and volunteering opportunities.
The course is made up of a number of components including external written exams, mandatory assignments, project work and coursework.
The number of units and delivery of the components is dependent on the qualification size and pathway taken.
The Health and Social Care Studies qualification can be taken in different sizes and different pathways, with course equivalents up to 2 A Levels dependent upon individual study programmes.
The pathways that can be studied as a Diploma (2 A Levels) are Health Science, Social Care, and a pathway in working with children and young people.
The Mandatory units focus on communication, health and safety, Equality and Diversity, Infection Control and personalisation and a Person Centred approach.
Optional units make up the remaining elements of the qualification.
No previous subject knowledge is required. Students will require well-developed writing techniques, effective research and study skills and a desire to undertake personal and professional development through work based learning.
Assessment is carried out over the two year programme and completed via external written exams, mandatory assignments and coursework. You will be required to carry out background reading, independent research and private study in order to complete all elements.
This vocational qualification in Health and Social Care provides much of the underpinning knowledge for the National Occupational Standards in Health and Social Care and Health and consequently act as a robust introduction to both social care and health sectors. They prepare learners for employment in these sectors or for Higher Education.
Many students who have studied these courses have gone on to university to study adult and child nursing, midwifery, social work, early years education, pharmacy studies, occupational therapy and much more.
Those going into employment work successfully within roles supporting children and young people, people with sensory and physical disabilities, the elderly, mental health sector, ethnic minority groups to name but a few.
What is the Residential opportunity at Revitalise?
During your studies you will have the opportunity to attend a residential placement with your teacher at Revitalise, a Holiday Centre for Adults with Physical Disabilities. This placement has been offered to students free of charge for last six years and is a well-established opportunity that runs for one week during the school holidays three times a year. Students often attend more than once during their programme and find the practical application of the class based learning invaluable along with and excellent addition to their CV and UCAS applications.
