ICT BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate at Southfield School for Girls Specialist Sports and Science College
Why should i study ICT?
It is designed for learners who are interested in an introduction to the study of creating IT systems to manage and share information. The objective of the qualification is to give learners the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills in IT systems, system management and social media in business. Learners will develop a common core of IT knowledge and study areas such as the relationship between hardware and software that form an IT system, managing and processing data to support business and using IT to communicate and share information.
Learners will study three mandatory units
Unit 1 – Information Technology systems
This unit gives a fundamental and synoptic understanding of all areas of IT including how hardware and software forms and IT systems, the relationship between the user and the system, protecting data and systems and wider issues within IT.
Unit 2 – Creating systems to manage information
You will examine a given scenario and develop an effective design solution to produce a database system. You will test your solution to ensure that it works correctly and evaluate the effectiveness of the database solution.
Unit 3 – Using Social Media in Business
You will explore different social media websites and the ways in which they can be used and the potential pitfalls when using them for business purposes. You will also develop a plan to use social media strategies for business purposes to achieve specific aims and objectives.

Unit 5 – Data Modelling
Unit 6 – Website development
5 GCSEs A*- C (or equivalent Level 2 passes) including English and Maths.
4 units of which 3 are mandatory and 2 are externally assessed.
