Physical Education A Level at The Wensleydale School & Sixth Form

Course description

Central to the study of Physical Education is the development of skill and technique. This is enabled by a better understanding of how the individual can improve in order to achieve a higher level of performance.

Course content

Students study a variety of areas, encompassing the psychology, physiology and sociology of sport in particular this course covers:
- the social basis for Sport & Recreation
- enhancing performance
- exercise and training
- global trends in international sport
- refining performance
- scientific principles of exercise and performance

Assessment

You will follow a course of theoretical studies, which will be externally examined, complemented by a large practical component. In addition to external examinations, you will have to produce a Performance Portfolio based upon a wide variety of issues.

Future opportunities

Students studying this course generally use it as a stepping stone on to a degree course in Sports Science or Physiotherapy for example. However, a significant number of students undertake study in order to develop an understanding of:
 why sport is so popular in today's society
 the health benefits resulting from active sport
 the complex skills and routines required in improving sporting performance.
