The new AQA specification has been designed to increase the choice offered to students studying GCE Geography, allowing for specialisation and progression to higher education and employment. There is a natural progression from GCSE to GCE, ensuring that there is development of content. Additionally this subject is open to students who have an interest in the world and the issues that face us. Students are given the opportunity to develop fieldwork skills and study geographical issues and impacts. Fieldwork will be spent in Shrewsbury studying rivers and an extended residential to study costs along the South Coast of England. This also coincides with Unit 4 in A2.

Entry requirements

5 or more GCSEs at grade A* - C including English and Maths.Geography GCSE is useful but not essential.

Assessment

Unit 1 – GEOG1 Physical and Human Geography 70% of AS, 35% of A Level 2 hour written examination 120 marks Structured short and extended questions The study of core geographical concepts along with contrasting themes of contemporary or environmental impact, management and sustainability. Candidates must study the core and then select one of the physical options and one of the human options. Core physical section: Rivers, floods and management Core human section: Population change Optional physical topics: Cold environments Coastal environments Hot desert environments Optional human topics: Food supply issues Energy issues Health issues
