Spanish A Level at Mill Hill County High School

Course description

The course is designed to enable students to:

  • Develop an interest in, and an enthusiasm for, language learning
  • Develop understanding of the language in a variety of contexts
  • Communicate confidently, clearly and effectively in the language for a range of purposes
  • Develop awareness and understanding of the contemporary society, cultural background and heritage of Spanish-speaking countries
  • Understand Spanish spoken in a variety of contexts

Course content

Type and Nature of the Work Involved

  • Assessment by external examination (no coursework)
  • Topic work is the main means of presenting information to students
  • Students are expected to develop their knowledge of all aspects of Spanish life
  • They are also encouraged to go to a Spanish-speaking country
  • A Foreign Language Assistant provides support with the development of oral work
  • Students are encouraged to work independently through the use of satellite TV, CD roms, the Internet and the Language Laboratory

The topics for AS Level : media, modern culture, healthy lifestyle and family and friendship.

The topics for A2 Level: environment, immigration, integration and racism, contemporary issues (law and order, poverty and wealth, science and technology) and cultural topics.

Entry requirements

A minimum of grade A in GCSE Spanish for A Level or a grade B if studying to AS Level only.

AS Level

Unit 1 - Speaking: Role Play & Topic Discussion
15% of total A Level mark

Unit 2 - Listening, Reading and Writing 1
35% of total A Level mark

A2 Level

Unit 3 - Speaking
15% of total A Level mark

Unit 4 - Reading, Listening and Writing 2
35% of total A Level mark
