Vehicle Technology Diploma at North Lindsey College

Course description

The Diploma in Vehicle Technology programme is based around a Level 1 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and is designed for students who have no previous motor vehicle experience. The programme explores the core aspects of modern vehicle technology and the repair and maintenance of these systems. The course includes theoretical and practical work in the following subjects:
- Health & Safety
- Engine and Cooling Systems
- Steering and Suspension Systems
- Braking Systems
- Exhaust Systems

These activities will be based in the College's well equipped vehicle repair workshop.

Course content

As part of this course students will gain general motor vehicle workshop experience and study the following units:

- Health & Safety Practices in Vehicle Maintenance
- Skills used in the Automotive Environment
- Spark Ignition Engine Systems
- Compression Ignition Engine Systems
- Engine Liquid Cooling Lubrication Systems
- Steering and Suspension Systems
- Vehicle Braking Systems
- Routine Vehicle Maintenance Process and Procedures
- Vehicle Wheels and Tyres Construction and Maintenance
- Vehicle Exhaust Systems
- Vehicle Driveline Maintenance
- Introduction to Spark Ignition Fuel Systems
- Introduction to Compression Ignition Fuel Systems
- Spark Ignition Systems Maintenance
- Basic Vehicle Valeting
- Light Vehicle Construction

Entry requirements

The typical entry requirements for the programme are 4 GCSEs at grade A*- E including Maths and English. All students will be treated on individual merit and final acceptance onto the course is subject to an interview.

Assessment

Students performance will be measured with a combination of written tests, on-line exams and practical assessments.

Future opportunities

The aim of the course is for students to progress to the Intermediate Diploma in Vehicle Technology or to gain work experience to start an apprenticeship programme. Students can also progress to the Motorsport Technology programme if they successfully gain GCSE grades A*-C in Maths and English.
