Art, Craft and Design A Level at Newlands Girls' School

Course description

Art is a form of communication and a vehicle for self-expression to explore ideas and
emotions. Studying Art, Craft and Design at AS and A Level encourages you to draw upon your imagination, whilst developing observational, analytical and practical skills.
Extra-curricular study includes visits to galleries, museums and entries to national
competitions and exhibitions. There are regular opportunities to develop your skills and understanding of the figure through Life Drawing classes.

Course content

The Year 12 AS programme develops two components of work which integrate practical,critical and theoretical studies, using a variety of media and processes.
 
The Year 13 A Level programme further extends practical work and your skill in independent study, working from given themes and starting points. Components of work address the fourassessment objectives and will include the following: painting, sculpture, drawing and recording using a variety of media, printmaking and ceramics.

 

Entry requirements

You require a minimum of a grade C in Art GCSE to undertake this course.

Assessment

At AS you will complete two components. Component 1 – Assessed material will initially be related to specific briefs set by the Art Department with further independent study from personal starting points (60% of the AS).
Component 2 will include preparation time responding to the externally set assignment given by the examination board, AQA. This will culminate in 10 hours of supervised time
(40% of AS).

At A Level you will complete two components of coursework. Component 1 is a personal investigation; this will include a written element of between 1000 - 3000 words (60% of A Level).
 
Component two is an externally set assignment given by the examination board, AQA, including preparation time and fifteen hours of supervised time (40% of A level).
