Course description

The First Extended Certificate in Applied Science programme has been designed specifically to meet the needs of the national developments in this sector. The ethos of the programme is to embed skills development in terms of knowledge application, mathematical and practical techniques within all modules at every level and to link with employers to ensure that these skills remain current and relevant to industry. Students will develop a range of analytical and scientific skills and practical techniques of enquiry to enable them to apply knowledge, understanding and skills in the workplace. During the course, students will be given the opportunity to identify and solve problems and will be able to communicate their arguments and analysis in a range of ways to different audiences as well as promoting Lifelong Learning which is a key component of the course.

The Science team comprises an advantageous mix of academically and industrially experienced staff who are highly committed to the success of their students and to the overall success of the course.

Course content

Edexcel First Extended Certificate in Applied Science has been developed to focus on equipping individuals with the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to succeed in employment in Science-based industries.

Workshop/Project Labs, Tutorials, Student Workshop support, Principles of Science, Chemistry & our Earth, Energy & our Universe, Biology & our Environment, Applications of Chemical Substances, Applications of Physical Science, Health Applications of Life Science, Scientific Skills, Practical Scientific Project, The Living Body, Science in Medicine, Chemical Analysis & Detection to list but a few exciting innovative classes, you will study.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at grade D or above

Assessment

This is mostly carried out by means of practical based assignments which are set throughout the duration of the programme for each module. Typically a module would contain between 2 and 4 assignments, no examination.

Future opportunities

This course will enable students to progress onto an Edexcel Extended Diploma in Diploma in Applied Science or further professional qualification in applied a wide range of Science based/related areas.

Career Progression Opportunities: On successful completion of this course you could seek employment opportunities in: a research laboratory in pharmaceuticals, a quality control laboratory in an industrial manufacturing, a hospital laboratory; a materials testing laboratory in the construction, paper or plastics industry, a forensic science laboratory or an environmental science laboratory, Crime Scene Investigation; Laboratory Technician; Forensic Psychologist; Forensic Scientist; Forensic Fire Investigation; Police Force.
