Spanish AS A2 at Wrenn Academy

Course content

The Modern Languages department offers excellent facilities for all students to pursue language courses in the Sixth Form.  There are courses available for linguistically able students wishing to continue studying languages to GCE Advanced Level, and courses for those students who realise the importance of continuing to study language in the Sixth Form, in preparation for the world of work. ‘A’ LEVEL FRENCH AND SPANISHFrench and Spanish are taught in groups which afford excellent guidance and supervision on the part of the teachers who are all highly-qualified graduates in modern languages; the students also have the advantage of good audio-visual equipment, as well as weekly lessons with the appropriate Foreign Language assistant.The GCE Advanced Subsidiary and Advanced level French and Spanish courses follow the OCR specifications.  These courses place great emphasis on practical communication, with authentic French and Spanish materials used whenever possible.  The courses are entirely topic-based with all the communicative skills taught and assessed via topics as diverse as Spanish cinema and French Youth Culture and include sessions on the vocational use of the target language.  Literary study remains an option within the topics and students have the option of a coursework element to replace the ‘culture and society’ writing examination paper.Every effort is made to teach language work through the use of topical authentic French/Spanish taken from newspapers, magazines, videos, songs, the Internet, etc.  Students are encouraged to take part in exchange visits, theatre trips and courses organised by the exam board about exam technique.Students who opt for French and Spanish will be expected to use initiative by listening to foreign radio stations, reading foreign publications and watching films in the foreign language.

Future opportunities

A languages A level qualification gives students the confidence to leave school and use their language in the work place; it is the firmest of foundations for future study and future career prospects in a variety of professions.
