Geography AS/A2 at Islington Sixth Form Consortium (IC6)

Course description

Geography explores the way we are influenced by the world around us and how we use and change it. If you are interested in environmental and global issues this course will give you the opportunity to examine some of the key ideas and debates in our world today.

There are 3 sections to the course:

  • Physical Environments - studying natural landforms such as rivers, coasts and tectonic landforms.
  • Human Environments studying migration, settlement, development, globalisation and population.
  • Applied Geographical Skills - exam based on practical study done on a residential trip.

The course offers you the opportunity to develop key fieldwork and research skills giving you valuable skills that employers and universities want.

Unit 3 Contemporary Geography

Unit 4 Geographical Research

Entry requirements

6 GCSEs Grade A* to C including English and Mathematics as well as a Grade B in English and Geography.

Assessment

100% modular examination.

Future opportunities

This qualification leads to a degree course in Geography or a related subject. It is a useful subject to study for a wide range of career paths including conservation, planning, leisure and tourism and environmental agencies.

    • In 2011 Central Foundation Boys' School achieved a 99% pass rate at A level and was graded 'Outstanding' by ALPS placing it in the top 5% of post-16 providers nationally for value added. It has been in the top 10% of sixth forms nationally for value added over the last three years.

      The school was inspected in November 2010 and Ofsted judged the sixth form provision to be 'outstanding' and made the following comments:

      The excellent facilities of the sixth form centre include seven fully equipped ICT rooms, which are also used for teaching and private study as well as a common room. There is a large sixth form
      team which comprises of the Deputy Head (Curriculum), Head and Deputy Head of Sixth Form, Sixth Form Learning Mentor, Careers Officer, Attendance Officer and Study Supervisor.
