Product Design A Level at Greenford High School
This specification seeks to develop students' knowledge, understanding, skills and application for designing products. Product design encompasses a wide range of design disciplines but is firmly rooted in the skills required to design and make high quality products. Products that are fit for purpose, satisfy wants and needs, enhance our day-today lives and, more importantly, give students the opportunity to demonstrate their design and technology capability.
Year 1 AS Level
Unit 1: Portfolio of Creative Skills (90 marks) - Students develop their creative, technical and practical skills through a series of product investigation, design and manufacturing activities.
Unit 2: Design and Technology in Practice (70 marks) - Students will develop a knowledge and understanding of a wide range of materials and processes used in the field of design and technology. Exam - 1hour, 30 mins.
Year 2 A2 Level
Unit 3: Designing for the Future (70 marks) - Students will develop their knowledge and understanding of a range of modern design and manufacturing practices and contemporary design issues. The modern designer must have a good working knowledge of the use of ICT and systems and control technology in the design and manufacture of products. They must also be aware of the important contributions of designers from the past which may provide inspiration for future design.Exam - 2 hours.
Unit 4: Commercial Design (90 marks) - Students apply the skills they have acquired and developed throughout this course, to design and make a product of their choice that comply with the requirements of either a resistant materials technology product or a graphic products, depending on the route they are studying.
A* - C in English Language GCSE
A* - B in Maths GCSE
A* - C in Science
B in Design & Technology GCSE Resistant Materials or Graphics.
Students can continue on to design degree or HND courses such as Product Design, Graphic Design, Interior Design, Design Management and Architecture. Some students may choose to progress onto a one year Art & Design foundation course locally to assist them in choosing the right degree course for them. Foundation courses are broad and varied and range from graphic design to product design, fashion & textiles and illustration, ceramics and photography.
