Biology A-Level at Sir John Talbot's Technology College

Course description

A Level Biology is a challenging and rewarding course which builds on the concepts and skills developed in the GCSE Additional Science course. It covers a wide range of topics including Cellular Biology, Genetics, Animal Physiology, Plants and Ecology. This course includes a background in the core principles underpinning Biology as well as the latest advances in Biological research.

Will this course suit me?

This course will suit those who have a keen interest in the study of living organisms and who enjoy scientific investigations. You will be required to carry out lab based practical work and fieldwork. You will need to be comfortable with both mathematical calculations and essay writing. Ideally you will have at least a grade B at GCSE in the subject you wish to study. In addition you must have a minimum of 4 other GCSEs at grade C or above including Maths.

Entry requirements

We ask that students applying to the Sixth Form have a minimum of 5 GCSEs A*– C Grade and aim for a B Grade in their chosen subject of study (predicted grades).

It is possible to choose some subjects if you have not studied them for GCSE.

You will be invited to attend a short, informal interview with the Head of Sixth Form to discuss your application and talk through your options. All places offered will be conditional until you have received your GCSE results in August and enrolment will take place on GCSE Results Day.

Future opportunities

A Level Biology gives a good basis for further study in a variety of university courses including: biology, biochemistry, medicine, nursing, midwifery, veterinary medicine, genetics, forensic science, sports science, environmental studies and teaching.
