AS/A2 Physics at Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School, Horncastle
Students will build on their GCSE knowledge of Physics but will also be introduced to completely new concepts such as Particle Physics and Special Relativity.
The Lower Sixth year consists of two units: 1. Particles, Quantum Phenomena and Electricity 2. Mechanics, Materials and Waves. There is also an investigative skills assignment (ISA), which replaces traditional coursework. The Upper Sixth consists of two further units: 1. Fields and Further Mechanics 2. Nuclear and Thermal Physics. In addition there is an optional unit with a choice of Astrophysics, Medical physics, Applied Physics and Turning Points in Physics. Finally there is a second ISA.
To take A level Physics you need a good grade in GCSE in Science and additional science or GCSE in Physics. Your mathematical ability must be good, although you do not necessarily need to take A level Maths.
In order to study AS level Physics you will need to have at least grade B in GCSE Physics or in Additional Science.
A level Physics is required for engineering and for a range of scientific careers. It is seen by many university admissions tutors as a sign that you can think clearly and logically.
