Countryside and Environment BTEC Level 2 Diploma at Stafford College

Course description

The BTEC Level 2 Diploma is a practical, work-related course.  You learn by completing assessments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands.  It introduces you to employment in the Countryside industry and provides a good basis to go onto a more advanced work-related qualification

Course content

The course is divided into two core units:

  • Work Related Experience in Land-based Industries
  • Environmental and Land-based Business

 

And the four following specialist units:

  • Participate in Providing Estate Maintenance
  • Conservation and Improvement of British Habitats
  • Introduction to Agriculture and Conservation
  • Plant and Animal Husbandry

 

English & Maths

We are committed to helping students improve their skills in English and maths.  Students on a full-time course at College who missed out on GCSE qualifications at grades A-C in these subjects at school will attend additional classes and receive support to enhance their grades.  Depending on individual ability, students will work towards GCSE, City & Guilds or Functional Skills awards to ensure that they have the qualifications needed to progress to university or employment.

Entry requirements

  • A BTEC Level 1 qualification in an environmental and land-based subject or a related vocational area
  • A standard of literacy and numeracy supported by a general education equivalent to four GCSE’s at grades D-G
  • Other related Level 1 qualifications
  • Related work experience

Assessment

You will be assessed on a continuous basis as you progress through the units on your course.  Practical assessments, work books, tests, short assignments and presentations will be used.  There are no end of year exams.

Financial information

This is a practical based course which will involve working outdoors.  You will need steel toe capped boots and suitable outdoor clothing.  There will also be a number day trips and countryside related activities for which there will be a cost of £30.  Details of these will be given during the course.

Future opportunities

The BTEC Level 2 Diploma is equivalent to four GCSEs grade A* - C and is a nationally recognised qualification which will help you to enter employment in the countryside/environmental industry.  Opportunities can include Assistant Countryside Ranger/Warden, an Assistant Estate worker or working for an Environmental Contractor.

 

Alternatively you could progress onto the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Countryside Management. This is a two year course which could lead onto Higher Education or employment on completion.
