Level 3 Extended Diploma in Aviation Operations at Trafford College

Course description

This programme is the equivalent to three A levels. It can be used as additional A levels for those already possessing academic qualifications but who require specialist knowledge for pre-entry to a HND or degree course in airline operations or management. It is also ideal for those that may wish to work within an airline or airport who need specific vocational knowledge at this level for employment. This programme has been designed to meet the needs of national airlines and airports for air side functions, both for passenger and cargo operations in the Aviation industry and as such is delivered by industry specialists. It is ideally designed for learners wanting to pursue a career in airport or aviation management - air traffic control, cargo or dispatch. This qualification provides the opportunity to build UCAS points toward entry to university. For those wishing to progress toward a career in flying, successful completion of this programme at Distinction level is recognised by commercial flight training providers. There are four mandatory core units:- 1. The Aviation Industry 2. Health, Safety and Security in the Aviation Industry 3. Security in the Aviation Industry 4. Inter-relationships within the UK Aviation Industry There are also optional units, a range of which will be offered at the discretion of the college to allow the candidate the ability to gain sufficient credits for this qualification. These may include:- Customer Service in the Aviation industry, Team Leadership, Managing conflict in Aviation, Marketing in the Aviation Industry, E-Business for Airlines, Human Resources in the Aviation Industry, Preparation for Employment in the Aviation Industry, Environmental Impacts of Aviation, Handling Air Passengers, Ramp Handling. Students will also undertake an industry placement, previous placements have been to Barton Aerodrome.This course is also available as a one year option,equivalent to one A level. Functional Skills Requirement To prepare you for a higher level course, employment or university you may be required to achieve a functional skill qualification in English & Maths. These qualifications will be studied at the appropriate level for your personal development/progression needs.

Entry requirements

Students aged 16 plusWhat entry qualifications are required?5 GCSE's at Grade C or above which must include maths and English or a full level 2 qualification and GCSE in maths and English at grade C; or BTEC First Diploma in a related subject and GCSE maths and English and a successful interview.


A variety of assessment methods are used including assignments, role plays, case studies, presentations and short tests.Students are expected to complete additional study and research outside of college.

Financial information

To enhance studies students may also carry out day visits and an overseas educational visit to the air side area of one or more major European airports such as:-Geneva, Schiphol, Eindhoven, Palma, Faro, GibraltarA variety of guest speakers carry out presentations from airlines, handling agents and cargo operations.Are there any extra costs involved?The costs associated with this course are approximately £400 per year depending on the visits chosen by the college. This payment will contribute towards the overseas visits and day visits programme.Financial support may be available for students experiencing financial difficulties.Course fees are payable for students aged 19 and over.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of the course it may be possible for students to apply directly for aviation employment, use the course toward further education here at Trafford College progress to higher education at university level or flight training.
