Art and Design A Level at Ysgol Y Strade

Course description

Advanced Subsidiary (AS)

  • Coursework Portfolio, ART 1 – 60%
  • Controlled assignment, ART 2 – 40% (exam)

Advanced (A Level)

  • Personal Investigation, ART 3 – 60%
  • Controlled assignment, ART 4 – 40% (exam)

The course work (ART 1 and ART 3) consists of making a portfolio of work that is based on themes of interest to the individual.


For the exam, (ART 2 and ART 4) pupils will have to choose a question from an exam paper that is set externally. They will have a preparation period before completing the work under examination conditions.

Entry requirements

Although each student will be considered on an individual basis for entry onto the course it is expected that applicant have completed the course to GCSE standard and have 5 GCSE grades (A*-C).

ART 1: Internally assessed; externally moderated.

ART 2: Internally assessed; externally moderated.

ART 3: Internally assessed; externally moderated.

ART 4: Internally assessed; externally moderated.

Future opportunities

Art provides the opportunity for pupils to express ideas, use their imagination and creativity as well as learn new skills.

It is an essential foundation for further studies at University which can lead to a variety of careers in this field.
