Music at Colonel Frank Seeley School
Unit 1: Performing Music (controlled assessment) Students perform as a soloist. Music can be in any style and on any instrument or voice. The unit is assessed via a 5-6 minute performance. The expected standard is Grade 5.
Unit 2: Composing (controlled assessment) Students produce one composition of three minutes duration, written to a brief set by the board. This is a coursework activity, undertaken in controlled conditions over 15 hours.
Unit 3: Developing Musical Understanding Assessment is via a two hour examination paper, requiring the study of 10 set pieces in a variety of styles and from a variety of eras.
Unit 4: Extended Performance (controlled assessment) This unit extends the skills developed in Unit 1, terminating in a performance of 12-15 minutes duration. The expected standard is Grade 6.
Unit 5: Composition and Technical Study (controlled assessment) Either two compositions of 3 minutes length written to the briefs set by the board written over 15 hours each under controlled conditions or two technical studies – this is an extension of theoretical skills acquired through study of 4 part harmony as AS.
Unit 6: Further Musical Understanding Assessed via a two hour examination paper, requiring a more in-depth study of 12 further set pieces.
Students wishing to study this course will be proficient performers who are able to tackle music of Grade 5 standard. Whilst an A-C grade in Music is desirable, students who have not taken the subject at GCSE will be considered, based on performance ability and meeting the A level entry requirements of 5 A-C grades at GCSE.
