Course description

This course investigates sports performance from a scientific angle. You will study anatomy, physiology, nutrition and exercise physiology and apply your knowledge to improve and maximise sporting performance in yourself or others through the development of fitness programmes.

Course content

Professional and vocational qualifications lead to accreditation, be it from an examining body, such as City & Guilds or Edexcel, or professional recognition, such as from Construction Skills or Lantra. The Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) recognises vocational achievement through the attainment of credits for units of study and for whole qualifications. The smallest qualification is the Award, then the Certificate, and the largest is the Diploma, although there are other intermediate qualifications also available. The duration of study will typically reflect the size of the qualification.

Entry requirements

Four GCSEs at A*-C, preferably including English or Maths, or a relevant Level 2 or apprenticeship qualitication

Assessment

Vocational and professional qualifications are taught through college based theory and practical lessons with further learning and understanding developed via directed self-study. Assessment consists of internally set coursework and assignments, although some professional and vocational qualifications may require the achievement of externally set assessments.

Future opportunities

Students generally progress onto a higher level of Sports Studies course, move into a job with training (such as an apprenticeship) or move into full time employment.
