Course Content

AS Level:

  • How data is processed into useful information.
  • How data is transferred across ICT systems
  • Threats to ICT systems and how these are managed.
  • Management of back up recovery operations.
  • ICT related legislation. • Practical spreadsheet and website work.
  • Some coding skills taught to enhance spreadsheet and website projects.
  • ICT in society

A Level:

  • How ICT technology is managed in large businesses.
  • Planning and installation of new technology across large businesses.
  • Design and planning software.
  • Outsourcing of ICT hardware, software and human resources.
  • Practical website building skills: HTML, CSS and PHP.

Entry requirements

No specific entry requirements.

Student Attributes

  • Good practical ICT skills.
  • Ability to learn new software.
  • An interest in the technical aspect of software.
  • Creative and good design skills.
  • Good planning and organisational skills.

Assessment

AS Level:

INFO 1: 50% of AS Level – written exam (1 hour 30 minutes).

Students prepare a short document before the exam which describes practical work they have undertaken. Questions are asked about the practical work and some of the theory taught.

INFO 2: 50% of AS Level – written exam (1 hour 30 minutes).

Questions on the theory which includes one essay style question accounting for a quarter of the marks.

A Level:

INFO 3: 30% of the A Level – written exam (2 hours) covering all of the theory of the A-Level year. Mostly long answer questions with one essay-style question.

INFO 4: 20% of the A Level. A coursework project in which students build and upload to the internet a website that meets the requirements of a real client. 

Future opportunities

It will lead to further study of information technology at university and a wide range of other courses and careers which require advanced IT skills. These include Business, Graphics, Film, Website Production and Design.
