English Language A Level at Blyth Academy

Course description

Students will study specialist linguistic methods such as pragmatics, semantics, phonology and discourse. We will explore how language is used in a variety of ways, depending on gender, levels of power, occupation and in technologies. Successful students will learn how language can influence the way we perceive different groups and social contexts.

Course content

Language and the individual ‐ how are texts varied and represented and how can we analyse them? Language varieties – how is language shown to be diverse and what atitudes are there towards this diversity?

Entry requirements

Students are required to achieve a grade B in GCSE English Language.

This course can lead to degree courses in English Language, Linguistics, Education, Marketing, Politics and Journalism. A strong qualification in this subject can lead to a broad field of careers where skills in analysis, investigation and communication are desirable such as media, police, law social services, civil service and teaching.
