Horse Management Technical Baccalaureate at Reaseheath College

Course description

The Technical Baccalaureate is a government backed programme that is designed for talented individuals who wish to pursue a career within the equine industry.

The ‘TechBacc’ enables you to study a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Horse Management alongside a Level 3 Maths qualification and extended industry project. In addition you will also complete a work placement with an employer in your vocational area of interest.

The course is designed for students who can demonstrate academic ability and a passion for the equine industry, and will provide a challenging and exciting opportunity to study this discipline at level 3.

The TechBacc provides an excellent foundation for progression onto specialist courses at university as it is equivalent to 4.5 A-Levels but can also provide a direct pathway into employment within the equine industry or onto Higher Apprenticeships.

You will gain:

  • Level 3 Extended Diploma in Horse Management
  • Level 3 Core Maths
  • Level 3 Extended Project qualification

Successful completion of these 3 elements will result in the awarding of the Technical Baccalaureate performance measure

Year 1

  • Principles of biology
  • Principles of nutrition
  • Behaviour and welfare
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Tack and equipment
  • Yard and stable management
  • Business management*
  • Equitation*
  • Grassland management*
  • Working horses from the ground*
  • Level 3 Core Maths
  • Undertake an extended project

You will also have the opportunity to undertake additional qualifications that support industry skills development.

Year 2

  • Animal health
  • Equine fitness
  • Rehab
  • Prepare horses for presentation
  • Understand the principles of inheritance and genetic manipulation
  • Fundamentals of science
  • Event management*
  • Rehabilitation and therapy*
  • Equitation*
  • Genetics*
  • Level 3 Core Maths
  • Undertake an extended project

You will also have the opportunity to undertake additional qualifications that support industry skills development.

Entry requirements

  • 5 GCSEs at grades B or above to include English, Maths and Science
  • Relevant Level 2 Diploma at Merit or above with GCSE grade B in Maths and English. Those with other level 2 qualifications will be considered on a case by case basis

You will have the chance to work towards additional qualifications, for example:

  • BHS
  • College certificates in riding, stable management & volunteering and health & safety

You will also complete an industry based placement and be assigned an ‘Industry Mentor’ who will provide 1:1 support and guidance during your course programme. Industry mentors are individuals who are successful within the equine industry and have a range of skills and experience to share with our students.

This will help you to develop the knowledge, experience and skills that will best prepare you for a career in the equine industry.

    • You will be studying in the beautiful, rural setting of Cheshire, one mile from the market town of Nantwich with good connections to Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool and Chester. 

      The Reaseheath campus itself is small enough to retain its friendly, family atmosphere, but large enough for you to be able to mix with lots of groups of students. 

      Our front lawn is great to sit out on during the summer and the College lake has much wildlife to watch. 

      Over the past few years we have invested over £50 million in our campus to give you the best possible environment for learning. 

      A further £30 million investment is planned for the campus including a £6 million advanced agricultural technology and engineering facility, new halls of residence and new sporting facilities.
