Health and Social Care BTEC Level 3 at Highfields School

Course description

The Health and Social Care sector covers a large range of occupations and professions. Through your Health and Social Care courses you will become aware of the variety of opportunities that a qualification in this suvject may lead on to. Level 3 qualification are designed to provide highly specialist work-related qualifications.

The staff in the department have experience of teaching a wide range of Health and Social Care topics. The Food and Health Department have a proven track record of successful results at both KS4 and KS5. Previous students have gone on to further study at University, into employment or taken up apprenticeships.

Course content

Over the course, you will study a range of units thatwill contribute to your learning and understandingof the Health and Social Care sector. These will becovered in depth to allow you to demonstrate anddevelop a range of practical and research skillsthat will enable you to complete a range of tasks.During the course you will have the opportunity tostudy a number of units covering aspects of healthand social care, including Equality, Developmentthrough the life stages, Health and Safety, Caringfor Children and Young people and EffectiveCommunication.

Diploma students are required to arrange andcomplete a period of work experience within a Health and Social Care setting; three placementswill make up 100 hours.

Much of your study will involve research, either in books or on the internet. There will also be practical work and some visits involved. You will be expected to keep and organise notes based on your class work and keep evidence of your independent research.

All students will have the opportunity to experience the vocational elements of the programme, and develop practical skills, such as demonstrating health and social care values that will help prepare learners for the world of work.

Entry requirements

No previous study of Health and Social Careis necessary. However, if you have studiedBTEC Level 2 Health and Social Care a Meritis required. You also need a minimum ofgrade C in English.


BTEC is assessed through coursework assignments. On each unit you will achieve a pass, merit or distinction grade. Unit points will then be accumulated to give you your overall qualification marl. Each unit has to be completed within a set deadline. You will receive teacher feedback throughout the taught ekeknebts of this unit.

Future opportunities

The depth and breadth of understanding that you will gain will make you very attractive to employers and to admission tutors at universities. On successful completion of a Health and Social Care qualification, a student can progress to or within employment and/or continue their study,

Our students have achieve excellent results since the introfucation of the course. In 2014, 75% achieved D* or D with the remainder achieving Merit.

Combines well with Biology, Psychology, Sociology and BTEC Hospitality.
