Creative iMedia Intermediate Certificate at Derby College

Course description

This is an exciting course designed for those who are interested in using digital technology in the production of creative designs.

It provides an ideal opportunity to explore a broad range of digital specialisms including graphics, web design, animation, photography, video, games and social and interactive media.

The course gives you the opportunity to experiment and explore emerging technologies and to develop innovative solutions to media-based problems. You will have access to industry standard equipment and resources and will be taught by skilled media professionals.

The course adopts a hands-on approach to teaching and learning and allows you the freedom to explore the areas of creative media that interest you most.

It also provides good progression opportunities to enhance your learning in a range of related curriculum areas including IT, Games Development, Media Production and Communication Design.

In order to support your main programme of study, future progression and life skills, you will also develop your skills in maths and English, undertake work-based activity and plan your learning with a personal coach.

Course content

The Creative iMedia Design course is vocationally related, industry relevant and suited to a broad range of learning styles and abilities.

The course will equip you with a range of creative media skills and provide opportunities to develop, in context, desirable transferable skills such as research, planning and review, working with others and communicating creative concepts effectively.

Entry requirements

You need a GCSE in a related subject at grade D. [Key Stage 3 Programme of Study in ICT within the National Curriculum]

You should also have a standard of maths and English equivalent to Functional Skills Level 1.

If you are a mature learner, we may be able to take your previous experience into consideration. Applicants will be interviewed, will undertake an initial assessment in maths and English, and must present a portfolio of supporting practical work.

Assessment

Certificate: two mandatory units plus two optional units

Future opportunities

Further Study
On successful completion of the programme to Merit or Distinction standard, as well as GCSE English at grade C, you can progress to a Level 3 programme of study including the Diploma and Extended Diploma in Digital Media Design or related subjects.

Careers
This course puts you on the pathway to roles such as web designer, digital layout artist, online journalist, social media manager, games designer, digital graphic designer, animator and special effects designer.
