Design Technology - Product Design AS A2 at Kingsthorpe College

Course content

The aims of the course are to encourage you to:

  • Develop and sustain your own innovation, creativity and design and technology capability, to recognise constraints and to produce high quality products.
  • Develop a critical understanding of the influences of the processes and products of design and technological activity from a historical prospective and in current practice.
  • Apply essential knowledge, understanding and skills of design production processes to a range of technological activity from a historical perspective and in current practice.
  • Use Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to enhance their design and technological capability.
  • Develop an understanding of health and safety, to develop spiritual, moral, ethical and social and cultural awareness inherent in design and technological activity and to develop critical evaluation skills in technical, aesthetic, economic, environmental, social and cultural contexts.
  • Develop as discerning consumers able to make informed choices.
  • Develop positive attitudes of co-operation and Citizenship and work collaboratively.

AS Level

  • Unit 1 - Product Development - Internal, coursework
  • Unit 2 - Knowledge and understanding of Product Design - External examination

A2 Level

  • Unit 3 - Further study of Product Design - External examination
  • Unit 4 - Commercial Product Development - Internal, coursework

Entry requirements

You should have a broad academic background and should have taken a course that provides a solid foundation for Advanced GCE work. You need to have achieved a grade C or above for Design Technology courses at GCSE.

Assessment

Units 2 and 3 are assessed by external examination in the form of a written exam. Unit 2 at the end of the AS year and Unit 3 at the end of the A2 year.

Units 1 and 4 are `design and make` products. Unit 1 takes place during AS and Unit 4 during A2. Unit 4 takes on a commercial aspect where students must design to solve a problem for a client.

Unit 2 is a 2 hour exam in the form of a question and answer booklet as is Unit 3.

AS Level

A2 Level

  • Unit 3 - Further study of Product Design - External examination

In addition to providing a firm foundation for progression to the full Advanced GCE the AS course aims to meet the needs of:

  • Those wishing to broaden their post 16 course
  • Those who wish to commit themselves to only one more year of full-time education.

The AS in Design and Technology is designed to be either a complimentary subject to Mathematics, Physics, Art at AS or Advanced GCE or a contrasting subject with English, History, Geography or Modern Languages.

Advanced GCE Design and Technology aims to provide an opportunity for you to develop your own creativity, capability and entrepreneurial skills, to apply knowledge and understanding to a range of technological activities and to develop critical thinking and collaborative skills.

Successful completion of this course would allow you to study the ever increasing subjects in the Design Technology field at College or University. It would also be an excellent course for those seeking to gain employment in the areas of engineering, product design and graphic design related industries.
