Extended Project Qualification at Appleby Heritage Centre

Course description

A free standing qualification which is also part of an Advanced Qualification and is worth half an 'A' Level. The qualification is assessed A*-E through the preparation and presentation of an individual project and attracts UCAS tariff points.It testsa wide variety of skills and prepares students for the rigour of university. It offers students the opportunity to research their own area of academic interest beyond the constraints of AS or Diploma qualifications.


Who should take this qualification?


Students who are aiming to go to university as not only will it potentially increase your portfolio of qualifications but it will also develop your independent thinking skills, research skills, analytical and critical thinking skills, as well as your argumentation and essay writing skills - essential skills for university.

Course content

Students will undertake at least 40 guided hours of study in the Autumn and Spring terms, in which you will develop ICT, research and project management skills.


Students must agree a project with their mentor. The report can be a 5000 word report, short report artefact, presentation or other medium. Students produce a project submission for approval. Once approval has been received students then carry out independent research and produce 'the project' having regular reviews with an appointed mentor.


Submission is MAY or November depending on the demand of the course.

Entry requirements

Students are required to have 4 GCSEs A*-C and personal recommendation from Head of Sixth Form, places are strictly limited. Students must be willing and able to work independently and unsupervised.






There is no examination - the final grade comes from the project proposal, project, production log, presentation and the evaluation.

Future opportunities

Admissions tutors have already indicated that they would look favourably on students who have completed this qualification. This would also be valued by employers as it demonstrates the ability to work largely unsupervised.
