Gateway to Work at Eastleigh College

Course description

Gateway to Work is a multi-skilled, full-time, short programme designed to assist, empower and support successful progression of 16 - 18 year olds who have not achieved their full potential during compulsory education and are struggling to engage in full-time employment or education.

This programme is suitable for individuals who have no qualifications as a result of academic ability; have been excluded; who have not met the entry requirement for their chosen programme; are unsure of their future career path or who have mild learning difficulties; have anxiety or social issues; have anger management issues; are NEET (Not in Employment, Education or Training) or have attended full-time programmes but have found it difficult to maintain the pace or just wish to change career paths part way through the academic year.

Course content

You will study:

  1. Maths and English (Functional Skills) from Entry 1 to Level 1
  2. Learning, Employability and Progression (L.E.A.P.) framework:
  • ITQ
  • Personal Development
  • Personal Effectiveness
  • Team Building
  • Practical Skills
  • Diversity
  • Customer Service
  • Hospitality
  • Cooking
  • Sport
  • Leisure and Money Management.

Dependent on attitude, attendance, commitment and individual ability, you may achieve a combination of qualifications ranging from Award, Certificate and Diploma at Entry 3 with those who excel, or have academic abilities that will permit it, progressing to achieve Level 1 qualifications.

Each qualification is based on achieving a number of credits. Each folder within the learning areas carries a value between 1 and 3, therefore, within reason, learners can chose which modules and learning area they wish to engage in to achieve their desired learning objectives.

All students without an A*-C grade in English or Maths will be required, as a condition of the programme, to undertake either a GCSE or Functional Skills programme.

Entry requirements

You do not need any set qualifications to be considered for this programme but to be successful in your application you will need to complete an interview with a member of the team and be between 16 and 18 years old.

Assessment

Your continually developing skills will evolve through a mixture of lessons, demonstrations, assignments and practical tasks that will be continually assessed through the duration of the programme.

Dependant on the programme you commit to, you will be expected to attend college four or five days a week for 24 or 19 weeks with the average learning day running for 5 1/2 hours.

Financial information

To enable the safety of the learners, it may be necessary to purchase appropriate protective clothing and footwear for the use in the workshop or any other off-site work experiences.

Future opportunities

It will enable future progression onto any suitable Level 1 programme, an Apprenticeship or into employment.

Further information

Gateway to Work groups are set at 14 which is supported by a tutor and a dedicated learning support.

The programme is flexible and varied to maintain student engagement with learning restricted to one hour sessions with a break within each hour of work.

The programme is specifically run with the intention of including a number of self-study periods areas where individuals may choose to undertake set modules, use the time for smaller projects or to catch up with tutor support.
