Life Skills - Award/Certificate/Diploma in Personal Development at Newcastle College

Course description

After an initial assessment of your learning needs, you will be able to choose from a range of modules.

Working with your personal tutor you will develop your Individual Learning Plan and set your Personal Learning Goals.

Course content

The course is divided into modules which may include:

  • Tutorials
  • City and Guilds Entry Level Award, Certificate or Diploma in Personal Progress
  • Independent Travel
  • Literacy and Numeracy
  • Leisure/Personal Development
  • Home skills
  • Independent Cookery
  • Projects/Team Building
  • Enrichment (Forest School, Music, Drama, Media, Sports, Crafts)
  • Taster in Real Working Environments of : Catering or Retail

You will study the modules appropriate to your needs.

Note: You will have literacy/numeracy targets which you will work towards through the modules. Some students may also access classroom based literacy/numeracy sessions where appropriate.

All students will work towards targets set in their Individual Learning Plan, identifying the essential/personal curriculum skills they need to develop.

Entry requirements

This course is designed at Entry Levels 1/2 but most will be operating at Entry Level 1.

You will need to be willing to work with others, try new things and want to develop your personal and essential skills.

Note: All learners must be interviewed by the admission team in Learning Development.

Assessment

Your personal tutor will monitor your progress carefully against the targets in your Individual Learning Plan to help you achieve your targets.

Future opportunities

Learners may progress from the Award year 1 to the certificate year 2 and to the Diploma year 3 in Personal Progress.

Individual learners will be given clear and challenging targets to progress towards a long term goal which may be transition into a supported living situation and engagement into the community.

 

Learners may also progress onto vocational courses as appropriate to their long term progression plans.

Learning Development also offer Supported Internships with external employers which may be appropriate for some Life skills students.
