English Literature A level at Kingswood Secondary Academy

Course description

If you enjoy reading and would like to study a wide range of
novels, poetry and drama, then English literature A level will
offer you both interest and challenge.

Course content

Unit 1: Aspects of Narrative
– You will study two novels and two poetry texts and
compare aspects of narrative.

Unit 2: (Coursework) Dramatic Genres
– You will read two plays, one by Shakespeare, and produce a
folder containing two pieces of written coursework, one of
which may be re-creative.
Units covered at A2

Unit 3: Texts and Genres
– You will choose one genre (either Gothic or Pastoral) and
compare three texts as representatives of that genre.

Unit 4: (Coursework)
– Further and independent reading. You will complete a folder
of two pieces of written coursework based on three texts.

Entry requirements

5+ A*-C grades at GCSE including B grade or above in English.

Assessment

The coursework units account for 40% of the marks. There are
two examinations, one at the end of Year 12 (2 hours) and one
at the end of Year 13 (2 hours).

Future opportunities

English Literature dovetails with any other subject (even
English Language!) and is traditionally regarded as one of the
most flexible vocational subjects. It can be the basis for very
many careers.
