History A Level at Rednock School

Course description

What will I learn on this A Level course?

The course is broken down into three main sections:

  1. The Breadth Study – The Emergence of a Superpower: The USA 1865-1975. You will study the development of America from the end of the Civil War, through the First World War, the Great Depression and conflict in Vietnam. Throughout you will think about political, social and economic changes.
  2. The Depth Study – The Wars of the Roses 1450-1499. You will study the changing dynastic fortunes of one, large extended family who all claimed the throne of England. The course follows the battles, the successive kings and the impact of all of this on the people of England.
  3. The Historical Investigation. You will study an historical issue of your choice, which will cover a minimum of a forty year period. You will find a range of primary and secondary sources to help you to write a 3000-3500 word essay.

Entry requirements

We strongly recommend that students have at least a ‘B’ grade at GCSE in this subject. A ‘C’ grade would be acceptable in some individual cases where there may be mitigating circumstances but would ideally be supported by a B grade minimum in English at GCSE.

If students were opting for this subject at 6th Form which they had not studied at GCSE then a B grade in another Humanities subject along with a B in English would be desirable.
