Business Studies AQA AS and A Level at Harris Girls' Academy East Dulwich

Course description

The structure of the new A Level course has now changed, as the ‘AS’ course, is a standalone qualification. New Year 12 students in September 2015, will be following the AS programme of study and will be entered for exams in Summer 2016.

This exciting new course is delivered in a way which allows students to study Business Studies in a holistic way.  Students will be introduced to ‘Business’ by using key business models, theories and techniques to support the analysis of contemporary business issues and situations.  

The content of the course is designed to engage students through topics and issues that are relevant in today’s society which include key contemporary developments such as digital technology, business ethics, and globalisation.

 

Course content

AS Course

This is a one year course, will cover 6 main topic areas:

  • [1] What is Business?
  • [2] Managers, leadership and decision making
  • [3] Decision making to improve marketing performance
  • [4] Decision making to improve operational performance
  • [5] Decision making to improve financial performance
  • [6] Decision making to improve human resource performance.

A Level Course

This is a two year course, which will cover 10 topic areas in total. Topics 1-6 from the AS list, as well as:

  • [7] Analysing the strategic position of a Business
  • [8] Choosing strategic direction
  • [9] Strategic methods: how to pursue strategies
  • [10] Managing strategic change

Entry requirements

  • Students require grade B or above in English Language GCSE and Maths GCSE. 
  • Successful completion of a GCSE Business related course is desirable. 

Assessment

AS Course

100% exam- two papers

Paper 1:

  • 1 hour 30 minutes
  • All 6 topics are examined
  • 80 marks in total
  • 50% of AS, three sections

Paper 2:

  • 1 hour 30 minutes
  • All 6 topics are examined
  • 80 marks in total
  • 50% of AS

Note: For the AS certificate to be awarded, students have to successfully complete these two exams.

A Level Course

Paper 1:

  • 2 hours
  • All 10 topics are examined
  • 100 marks in total
  • 33.3% of A Level

Paper 2:

  • 2 hours
  • All 10 topics are examined
  • 100 marks in total
  • 33.3% of A Level

Paper 3:

  • 2 hours
  • All 10 topics are examined
  • 100 marks in total
  • 33.3% of A Level

Note: For the A Level certificate to be awarded, students have to successfully complete all three exams.

 

 

Future opportunities

Students will develop the knowledge and skills needed to analyse data, think critically about issues and make informed decisions – all skills that are needed for further study and employment.

      During your course of study our careers consultant will advise you about applying for higher education, application forms, entry qualifications and career prospects. Sixth form tutors will assist in writing CVs.

      If you would rather start your career after Harris then the careers consultant will provide advice, mock interviews and help with completion of application forms and CVs.
