Physics AS Level at South Wirral High School

Course description

UNIT 1: MECHANICS

Mechanics, including motion along a straight line, projectile motion, Newton’s law of motion, energy & power.

Properties of materials, including density and the Young’s molecules.

UNIT 2: ELECTRONS, WAVES & PHOTONS

The nucleus including particles, antiparticles and photons; hadrons and leptonsl the quark model.

Quantum phenomena including photo electricity, energy levels and photon emission, wave particle duality.

Electricity including electrical quantities, resistivity, circuits and competents, alternating current.

Waves, including longitudinal and transverse waves, progressive and stationary waves, refraction, diffraction and interference.

UNIT 3: CENTRE ASSESSED UNIT

PRACTICAL SKILLS

Selection and use of various equipment

Processing of data

Making observations and measurements

Analysing and evaluation of results

Entry requirements

GCSE Grade B or above in Additional Science, or Grade B or above in GCSE Physics along with the commitment to put in the required work outside the classroom. You should also consider studying Mathematics at AS/A2

Assessment

Unit 1Externally set and marked // 30% of total GCE AS mark // 1 hour 15 minutes written paper

Unit 2Externally set and marked // 50% of total GCE AS mark // 1 hour 15 minutes written paper

Unit 33 tasks : 1. Qualitative 10% 2. Quantitative 20% 3. Evaluative - 10% // Externally set, internally marked // 20% of total GCE AS marks
