Course description

Business is very well regarded by universities and employers alike as students who have studied Business have strong analytical, literacy and numeracy skills.

Course content

Unit 1 Business 1: Introduction to Business - aims and objectives, the importance of profit and the different forms of business. Management, leadership and decision making - leadership models and decision trees.

Unit 2 Business 2: Finance - Budgeting, improving cash flow and profits. People in business - organisational structures, recruitment, training and motivation. Operations Management - operational decisions, increasing productivity, quality, customer service, suppliers and technology. Marketing and Competition - designing and using an effective marketing mix, market conditions and competitiveness.

Unit 3 Business 3 Strategies for Success: Managing Change - planning for change, leadership and corporate culture, making strategic decisions, decision making. Assessing changes in the business environment - the effects of changes in the economic, political, social, ethical and technological environment and responses of organisations. Assessing globalisation and the impact on business, ways of entering international markets and ways of managing international business.

Entry requirements

Minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade A*-C (or equivalent), including Mathematics and English. Grade C in GCSE Business, if taken. Experience shows that your chances of success are greater in this subject if you have a Grade B in GCSE English and Maths.

Assessment

Business 1 Written Paper: 2 hours
Weighting: 33.3% of total A level marks

Paper: multiple choice questions, short answer questions and at least one essay

Business 2 Written Paper 2 hours
Weighting: 33.3% of total A level marks

Paper: 3 data response questions with short essay answers
Business 3 Written Paper: 2 hours
Weighting: 33.3% of total A level marks
Paper one compulsory case study followed by up to 7 questions

Future opportunities

Business combines well with most subjects. A combination of Mathematics and Business at A-level is especially recommended to anyone considering Business Studies or Economics as a degree course.
