Health & Childcare - Level 1 Diploma - 1 year at Longley Park Sixth Form College

Course description

This course is all about improving your confidence and personal skills.  It is a personalised learning programme which means that it is tailored to what you need in order to progress on to further training, employment or study.  You will learn to work confidently in a group, take part in practical activities and find out about work and study in different areas.

Course content

You will find out about opportunities for work in the Care sector and develop the personal skills you need to work with children and people needing care.  Units of study include:

  • Creative activities foir young children
  • Communication skills
  • Health and social care needs
  • Family relationships
  • Drug and alcohol awareness
  • Young parenthood
  • Book, rhymes and poems

Plus guest speakers and trips to childcare and health centres.


A number of specifications will be changing and prospectus entries are based on information we have to date. This means that course content may be subject to change.

Entry requirements

You should have GCSE grades 2/E and 1/fF.  If you did not take your examinations for some reason, we will ask you to take a diagnostic assessment in Maths and English to make sure that this is the right level for you.


You will be assessed in a variety of ways such as assignments, practical observations, logs and diaries and verbal presentations.  You will need to present a portfolio of evidence for each unit.  You will carry out independent study and research to complete a number of set tasks related to the units and complete many of the tasks in your own time as well as showing your skills within your sessions.  Assessment may also include supervised or controlled observations or exams during session time.  The functional skills will be assessed through an exam and portfolio.

Financial information

Everything you must have to undertake the course will be provided by college. You may have to pay for extras such as trips/visits.

Future opportunities

Students from this course have gone on to Level 2 courses including Sports, Art & Design, Media, Business, Health and Science. Some students have then gone on to advanced study and to university. Others have chosen employment or apprenticeships.
