Biology - AS Level at Skinners' Academy
Biology is the study of living organisms and how they are adapted to their environment. Students will learn about the relevance of biology to everyday life. They will develop independent practical skills, and increase their knowledge and understanding of biological principles. Students have opportunities to go on field study trips, to attend lectures at local universities and to visit exhibitions. There are 6 units to be studied. These are: • Cells, Exchange and Transport • Molecules, Biodiversity, Food and Health • Practical Skills in Biology 1 • Communications, Homeostasis and Energy • Control, Genomes and Environment • Practical skills in Biology 2 How will this qualification be assessed? AS Two units are externally assessed through written examinations. These are • Cells, Exchange and Transport • Molecules, Biodiversity, Food and Health A2 • Communications, Homeostasis and Energy • Control, Genomes and Environment There is no coursework (as we know it) but rather two units (one at AS, one at A2) are internally assessed, moderated by post units, and will assess students' practical skills. The assessment uses OCR-set tasks and mark schemes. These are done in class and assessed by the class teacher.
for AS level – a minimum of 5 GCSE passes at grade C or above, usually with a Grade B or above in the subject to be taken at AS level or in an associated subject. for A2 level – candidates should normally have obtained a pass at AS level, preferably at grade C or above.
You can go into employment in areas of pharmacy, biotechnology, nursing, catering and land management.You can follow a degree course in biology, environmental science, medicine, nursing, dentistry, psychology, forensic science and pharmacy. You can enter a Higher National course in biological sciences and related programmes.
