Mathematical Studies (Core Studies) - BTEC L3 at The Milton Keynes Academy
The aims and objectives of the AQA Level 3 Mathematical Studies course are to enable students to:
- Think critically about mathematical content
- Analyse and interpret everyday mathematical situations
- Analyse, interpret and represent large data sets
- Create mathematical representations using technology
- Solve mathematical problems using a variety of new techniques
Students are introduced to the common content modules:
- Critical Analysis
- Analysis of Data
- Maths for Personal Finance
Plus one of the following optional modules:
- Statistical Techniques
- Critical Path and Risk Analysis
- Graphical Techniques
Students will study all four of the common content modules in both year 12 and year 13. Student’s skills in these areas will be developed significantly over the course of the two years with a hands-on approach being used in class. Students will also have the opportunity to study the three optional modules, however only one can be picked to answer as part of the final exam.
This course is linear and so you will only have to take exams at the end of year 13. There are two papers and they are evenly weighted at 50% each.
4 GCSEs A*-C (or equivalent), including minimum grade D in English & C in Maths.
Paper 1: (1.5 hours) Critical Analysis, Analysis of Data, Maths for Personal Finance
Paper 2A: (1.5 hours) Estimation and Statistical Techniques
Paper 2B: (1.5 hours) Estimation and Critical Path and Risk Analysis
Paper 2C: (1.5 hours) Estimation and Graphical Techniques
A qualification in Level 3 Mathematical Studies would act as a great stepping stone for students who wish to progress to University, but do not want to study Maths. Instead it would aid those interested in Economics, Psychology, Science subjects, Geography or other technical and vocational qualifications.
