Physics A Level at Harrow College

Course description

Linear A Level Physics explains the properties of matter and energy and their interaction throughout the universe. This course will help you to develop a clearer understanding of the underlying principles of an increasingly technological world. You will develop your ability to apply physical principles and concepts to dealing with everyday problems that require logical and lateral thinking. You will be able to make judgements on the validity of given information and you will further your practical skills.

Course content

You will cover three units in the year. These are Physics on the Move, Physics from Creation to Collapse and Experimental Physics.

Theory supported by a large element of practical work.

Entry requirements

6 GCSEs at grade C or above, including English Language and at least 2 grades at A/B. GCSE Maths grade B or above plus a grade BB or above in Science/Additional Science or a grade B in GCSE Biology. Candidates must enrol for AS Maths along with A Level Physics.

The Linear A Level Physics is a two year programme. To progress to year 2 you will have had to study the AS Physics content in year 1 and gained a minimum of a grade D. Must include AS Mathematics.


Exams - 80%, Coursework -20%, Successful completion of the course will lead to a certificate awarded by OCR.

Future opportunities

A level Physics can open up a range of careers and higher education courses in engineering, architecture, mathematics, actuarial science, physics, and astrophysics. A level Physics can also help gain direct entry into employment, especially into the scientific and related sectors.

Equipment or materials:

You should expect to provide yourself with all standard stationary, writing materials and folders. You will also need a calculator.

Additional costs:

You may wish to purchase your own copy of course books amounting to approximately £30. A contribution to optional relevant trips will be asked for.
