Skills for Employment in the Construction Industry Level 1 Diploma at Bath College

Course description

This course will prepare you to working in the construction industry and will help you progress on to the Plumbing Level 2 course. Topics include trade skills, health and safety, plumbing, gas and electrical, and wood.

Course content

Units cover basic plumbing operations and associated trade skills:

  • Introduction to construction work
  • Principles of health and safety
  • Personal work skills
  • Handling and storing materials and components
  • Introduction to self-employment
  • Plumbing operations
  • Gas Operations
  • Electrical operations

Entry requirements

  • Four GCSEs at grade E or above, to include maths, English and science
  • A desire to enter the plumbing trade
  • Basic skills assessment
  • Interview

Assessment

Practical coursework is assessed by our qualified trade assessors and theory work is assessed by a combination of coursework and end-tests. Functional skills are assessed by exam.

Future opportunities

This course provides an entry route into the Level 2 Plumbing and Domestic Heating course and allows you to investigate the industry and gain basic skills before progressing in a discipline. Progression on to higher levels may be dependent on you finding relevant work with an employer within the sector and meeting the particular entry requirements for that course.
