Art at Bourne Grammar School

Course description

Art is absolutely central to a humane and liberal education. To increase and broaden our depth of knowledge about world culture, about our desire as human beings to create images and objects in the world around us, and about our need to communicate to each other in a language that transcends mere words, is crucial.

In every aspect of modern life, images and icons are everywhere, from our mobile phones to our remote controls, from signage on roads to navigating around the internet. Pictures are, more than ever, superseding written language.

To be able to manipulate and control these images, to make them with a firm and solid knowledge of their power – how tone, colour and line behave – is a key skill.

As our age progresses and in many instances we are removed from a ‘hands on’ experience, art provides us with the opportunity to make and Do.

In addition to the variety of opportunities offered by the course, A Level Art is
challenging. Dedication and commitment are both necessary for the achievement
of high grades, especially during the coursework component.
