Drama and Theatre Studies (AS Level) at Abbot Beyne High School - a Specialist Visual Arts College

Course description

The course demands practical, creative and communication skills in almost equal measure. You will extend your ability to create drama and theatre, either in a performing directing or designing role. The course will involve taking part in drama productions, studying plays, playwrights and theatre practitioners as well as visiting the theatre. You will also be required to write about drama you have seen, read or acted in an analytical and informed critical way. The history of theatre is also an important element of the written work and by the end of Year 13 you will be able to discuss how theatre has changed and developed throughout the ages. This AS and Advanced GCE can lead to further study in Drama, Theatre Studies and Performing Arts in Higher Education at degree or HND level. It can be used as part of your course to broaden your studies and may lead on to a career in the Performing Arts industries. Drama and Theatre Studies AS and Advanced GCE can also complement a range of other subjects and is useful in building confidence and improving presentation skills in a range of careers.

Five GCSEs grade A-C, including English and Maths.

Future opportunities

You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses such as Music and Drama or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Dance, which could lead onto higher education to study Dance or more general higher education courses. With further training you could go into a job related to Dance such as a Chorographer, Dance Teacher or you may wish specialise in an area of dance such as ballet and perform on the stage as a professional dancer. You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for, especially within the Performing Arts sectors.
