Music - As and A2 at Downend School

Course description

Music A-level is a stimulating and challenging course designed for the musically able student. It encourages a deeper understanding of the processes and features of music from the Western Classical world. Students will be stretched in all areas of their musical undertaking including performing, composing and listening/understanding.

AS - (3 units)

Performing – Students will need to complete a 5-6 minute pre-planned or improvised performance on their main instrument.

Developing Ideas + composing - Students will choose from four composition briefs and select one as the basis for a three minute composition.

Listening (aural) and Understanding (set works) – This unit focuses on listening to familiar music and understanding how it works.

A2 - (3 further units)

Performing - This unit enables students to extend their performance skills.

Composition and Technical Study - allows students to further their compositional and technical skills resulting in a three minute composition as well as a technical study.

Understanding (aural) and Analysing (set works) Music - This unit focuses on listening to music, familiar and unfamiliar and understanding how it works.

Taught in small groups allowing for individual attention to be given and support across theory and performance. The style of delivery is Interactive with a high degree of Technology used such as & Applemacs.

Entry requirements

AS: Open to personal interview – Performance must be at least working towards grade 5 at start of AS year. Must be working at least Theory grade 4 standard at start of AS year.

A2: Grade D in Music AS plus personal interview.
