Animal Care Level 2 Diploma at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College*
This programme is aimed at providing learners with the knowledge, experience and skills required to work in the animal care industry or to progress to further study in this field.
Modules studied may include: Work-related Experience, Animal Health & Welfare, Animal Biology and Animal Feeding and Accommodation.
As part of the ethos of upskilling our learners, opportunities to improve their Maths and English skills will be identified in lessons and throughout the course.
Learners should possess a minimum of a grade 4 (grade C) in English and Science. Additionally, learners need to be successful at interview and attend a college Taster day.
Lessons will be a mixture of theory and practical sessions; the practical sessions may include experience with our own on-site animal collection and wherever possible making use of our external partnerships. There will be a variety of assessment methods used (written assessments, observations, presentations and discussions) and learners will gain a thorough understanding of the evidence they are expected to produce.
Learners will be challenged to progress to further Level 3 (A Level equivalent) courses after successful completion of this course. To progress, learners must complete their Level 2 programme with a minimum attendance figure of 90%, have an exemplary attitude towards their learning and meet all assessment deadlines and overall achieve a merit in the Biology unit and 2 distinctions in any other units and have achieved a minimum of a C grade in English, Maths and Science.
Learners can find themselves employed in kennels, catteries, pet stores, wildlife parks, dog grooming salons and working with zoological collections.
We would advise all learners to try and secure additional voluntary work in one of these industries alongside their work placement as this could provide enhanced opportunities for employment upon course completion.
