Textiles AS level at The Thomas Aveling School

Course description

Students must be able to work independently and show personal commitment to study, as the course has both a practical and academic aspect.

Textiles requires students to respond in a personal way to, and research a given theme in coursework units and examinations. During the course students will develop their documentation of observed and developed ideas and experiment fully with textiles techniques.

Analysing and comparing textiles from the past and present, and from around the world, will help students to gain a rounded view of their subject. They will make links between the work of artists, craftsworkers and designers with their own, whilst using and extending specialist vocabulary.

Both AS and A2 include a coursework unit lasting from september to march and an examination which is set before Easter to be sat in term 5.  Students are expected to visit galleries and museums as part of their independent research commitment. All class and homework will be done for the purpose of completion of coursework or as exam preparation.

Future opportunities

Students may wish to take the course purely to develop their established enthusiasm for the subject and to gain a valuable qualification.  Most however will go on to apply for places at art college or colleges of further education as preparation for education at degree level.  Textile, fashion, theatre set/costume design and surface decoration courses are some of the possible avenues students may choose.  Associated careers in advertising, marketing, architecture and retail offer other possibilities, in fact the study of Textile Design can help students to develop transferable skills into most careers or jobs.
