Music at Notre Dame High School

Course description

The Music Department at Notre Dame High is at the heart of the school community. All music students take an active part in the very busy musical life of the school, performing in the many concerts, school musicals, Masses, competitions and festivals. Sixth form music students are eligible for a subsidised weekly half hour instrumental lesson from a visiting specialist teacher. We have a large team of highly experienced visiting teachers and regularly enter pupils for Associated Board, Guildhall, Trinity and Rock School exams and diplomas.

How it is assessed

The music A level course covers three units at AS and a further three units at A2.

  • Unit 1 Performing Music
  • Unit 2 Composing
  • Unit 3 Developing Musical Understanding
  • Unit 4 Extended Performance
  • Unit 5 Composition and Technical Study
  • Unit 6 Further Musical Understanding

Entry requirements

The outline of the AS course is similar to GCSE Music, albeit at a higher level. Some pupils who are proficient at playing an instrument go on to A level without having completed GCSE Music first, although a B grade or higher at GCSE is advisable.
