Animal Care Studies Diploma Level 1 at New College Stamford

Course description

This practical course will develop your understanding of animals in the wild and in society as well as learning how to assist with maintaining the health, well-being and accommodation of animals, including feeding, watering and handling. You will gain the skills you need to work in animal welfare, zoos, wildlife establishments, dog grooming, pet care and retail, animal training, animal wardens or education and entertainment.You will be required to take part in 30 hours of work experience including work related experiences in the sector.This course is 20% theory v 80% practical.

Course content

You will learn through a combination of theory and practical based learning including written assesments, group discussions, presentations and practical handling. You will study one health and safety unit which is assessed externally.

Entry requirements

No formal entry requirements are required. You will need to show a strong interest and desire to work with a range of animals through a practical exercise at your interview.


The majority of the assessment is completed through ongoing assessment and practical handling of a variety of species.

Future opportunities

Animal Care Diploma Level 2, or employment in the industry.

Further information

The course contains very practical elements and sensible, weatherproof clothing is required, although overalls are provided. Sturdy footwear is essential, with no open-topped or heeled shoes. All jewellery must be taken off during practicals and hair tied back.
