Information Communication Technology at Wrenn Academy

Course content

The facilities at Wrenn School are excellent and there is an on-going policy of upgrading and adding to the hardware and software currently available.  All computer suites are fully networked, allowing a multimedia set-up with a fully screened Internet Service.  Two new computer suites have recently been opened and the whole network upgraded. At Wrenn School, the aim is for all students to be entered for an ICT qualification, and we currently offer three routes to ICT success at Key Stage 4.  These are Double Award GCSE, Short Course GCSE and Entry Level.Applied GCSE ICT (Double Award) This course is for those students who particularly enjoy learning about computers and therefore opt for ICT an as option.  This is a nationally recognised work-related qualification designed to provide students with a choice of routes into further education or employment. As the name suggests this qualification is equal to two GCSEs and is split into 3 units of equal weighting.  The first unit, based on ICT tools and applications is assessed through a computer based examination.  Unit 2 (ICT Systems and Organisations)  & unit 3 (ICT and Society) are assessed through a portfolio of coursework assignments. Successful students are those who have a lively and enquiring mind with an interest in information and communication technology.  They have a willingness to explore new ideas and an ability to communicate these ideas effectively.  Students will gain an understanding of software and hardware and their use within organisations and society.  They will develop skills and knowledge in the application and use of ICT based systems and solutions. Students will have opportunities to apply learning in a practical and realistic way and will follow a programme of study that enables progression to further courses and employment in ICT.  Most importantly, students will gain confidence by developing independent learning skills.
