Btec Childrens Play, Learning and Development at Cockburn John Charles Academy
This qualification will give learners the skills, knowledge and understanding required to prepare for employment or a higher education course in the field of children’s play learning and development.
The course very much reflects recent thinking in the sector such as the Tickell Report (2011) and the Nutdown Review (2012) alongside more established thinking offered by theorists such as Piaget, Vygotsky and Bruner.
Unit titles include:-
- Research skills.
- Child Protection.
- Observation, assessment and planning for play and development.
- Play in early years settings.
- Diversity, equality and inclusion.
You will be expected to have 5 GCSEs A* - C or equivalent. It must include English and Maths. It is highly recommended that a good science qualification is also achieved.
For all 3 qualifications there is an externally tested component for Unit 3.
The remainder of the units are assessed internally. All portfolios will include evidence of a good level of knowledge and understanding with analysis and evaluation needed for the higher grades.
Each unit can be awarded at Pass, Merit or Distinction. The Subsidiary Award and award recommend work placements. The National Diploma requires 800 hours over the two year course. The National Diploma is classed as a stand-alone qualification in that no other qualifications can be taken alongside it. This is due to the time spent out on placements.
This subject will help to prepare students for a number of child related professions such as Nursery Worker, Primary School Teacher, Social Worker, Youth Worker, Medical professions and Therapist. Many of these professions will require further study at university.
