Animal Care BTEC Level 2 Diploma at Stafford College
The BTEC Level 2 Diploma is a practical, work-related course. You learn by completing assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. It introduces you to employment in an animal care environment and provides a good basis to go onto a more advanced work-related qualification
The course is divided into four core units:
- Undertake Work Related Experience in the Land-based Industries
- Maintain Animal Health and Welfare
- Undertake Practical Animal Feeding
- Maintain Animal Accommodation
And THREE of the specialist units:
- Introduction to the Principles and Practices of Animal Behaviour and Handling
- Understanding the Basic Principles of Animal Biology
- Contribute to the Nursing of Animals
A minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade D or E including Science, Maths or functional skills equivalent at Level 1. A keen interest in animals is essential.
You will be assessed through continuous assignment work using a variety of methods including some work based experience/placements.
An initial course fee of £40 will be charged at the start of the year. This will cover transport, entry costs and overheads for the practical elements and opportunities presented by the course.
As this is a practical based course it will be necessary to buy a pair of steel toe capped work boots (costing about £25 from most work wear manufacturers).

The BTEC Level 2 Diploma is equivalent to four GCSEs grade A* - C and is a nationally recognised qualification which will enable you to enter employment in one of a variety of types of animal care environments. Opportunities can include kennels/cattery assistant, pet store assistant and pet grooming.
Alternatively you could progress onto one of the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma courses in Animal Management or Applied Science. Students would need to achieve an overall distinction for progression onto the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Animal Management.
