Film Studies AS and A level at Chace Community School

Course description

This course is designed to deepen students’ understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of film.  Students will study a variety of film texts and respond through written and practical work.  The course follows a modular structure:

AS level

FM1  Exploring Film Form  (coursework - 40%)

•  One analysis of a chosen extract from a horror film of the student's choice (1500 words)

•  One creative project based on a film sequence or short film 

FM2  British and American Film (Exam (2½ hours) – 60% )

A2 level

FM3  Film Research and Creative Projects  (Coursework – 40% )

(Independent project and Film Journalism or Film Making) 

FM4  Varieties of Film Experience: Issues and debates  (Exam (2¾ hours) 60% )

Entry requirements

Creativity and a genuine interest in the Film industry are essential.  A GCSE in Media Studies is not necessary, however in order to cope with the analytical written aspect of the course, you should have a grade C or above in English. A Level Film and Media Studies are different courses and you may choose to take both subjects.  Students are expected to carry out individual research and reading therefore motivation, commitment and initiative are also compulsory traits. 

Assessment

Study methods:  Note taking during film screenings; group discussions and presentations; researching films, topics, directors, film industries etc; analytical essay writing; creating films, storyboards, DVD commentaries and screenplays. 

Future opportunities

Many universities offer Film Studies courses, which can be studied as complete degrees or combined with other subjects such as Media Studies, Communications, Literature, Sociology, popular culture.  Studying Film Studies can lead to careers in journalism, film and television.
