ICT AS/A2 Level at The Bishops' Blue Coat CofE High School
This course will appeal to students who enjoy studying a subject that is relevant to their own lives and enjoy finding out their own answers – not just being taught. You will develop valuable ICT skills which can be used at home, in industry and in commerce.
The WJEC A-level qualification has been developed to provide a broad educational basis for further training, further education or for moving into appropriate employment within the ICT sector
IT1 Theory Examination (60%)
IT2 Portfolio—DTP & Multimedia (40%)
IT3 Theory Examination (60%)
IT4 Portfolio—Design and make a product using the systems life cycle (40%)
The most important thing you need is a lively and enquiring mind, an interest in ICT, a willingness to explore new ideas and an ability to communicate your ideas effectively. It is not a requirement that you should have studied ICT at KS4.
Some topics covered in the course are developments of work covered at GCSE level, but many others are new. Students should have at least a grade C in English and Maths, plus 3 other GCSE passes at grade C or above.
There are two examination papers and two pieces of coursework which make up the qualification. The examination components make up 60% of the entire A-level. The coursework components are marked in school by teachers and then sent to external examiners, these make up the final 40% of the qualification.
Students with IT qualifications have access to a wide range of career and higher education opportunities. You learn and use a variety of transferable skills throughout the course.
These include collecting, analysing and interpreting data, presenting your findings in different ways and identifying and developing the links between different parts of the subject. These skills are in great demand and are recognised by employers, universities and colleges.
