Physics at Derby High School

Course description

Physics A SpecificationIntroductionFor anyone wishing to study degree courses such as Physics, Medical Physics and Engineering, Physics A Level is a must. However, it also provides useful support for degrees in other disciplines. For example, the editor of The Lancet has written recently that medical students should be expected to know more Physics than is currently the case. Analytical skills learnt from Physics are very useful for those going into financial careers. Finally, Physics is considered to give a good grounding in the logical thinking required for courses such as Law. But of course, the very best reason for studying Physics at A Level is that you find it interesting! Why have we chosen this particular specification? We feel that the AQA Physics A specification combines traditional rigour, with an up to date approach; thus it is a course which will meet the needs of A level students at Derby High School very well.Attractive features of the course are:A clear, well set out textbook. Example calculations are shown and the text is concise, so it’s easy to take in the key points. It begins at the cutting edge of Physics. The first unit begins with Particle Physics. Physicists are currently hoping to discover more about the structure of matter from the results of experiments with large accelerators.Practical skills are given prominence. There will be regular practical sessions, so that the appropriate skills to cope with the practical assessment will be developed. (See below)
